Get your IP PIN before mid-November

The IRS encourages taxpayers to get an Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN) so no one else can file a return using their Social Security number or ITIN.

The IRS reminded taxpayers that they can protect themselves against tax-related identity theft with an IP PIN, a six-digit number known only to you and the IRS.

The IP PIN stops anyone else from filing a federal return with your Social Security number or ITIN. Anyone can request one, even if they aren't required to file.

Key date: the online IP PIN tool goes offline in mid-November 2026 for annual maintenance and is generally back by mid-January 2027. If you plan to file early in 2027, request it before then.

The IRS will never ask for your IP PIN by phone, email, text or social media. Share it only with a trusted tax professional, and only when you're ready to file.
